2/6/15 – 2/8/15
Started my drive from Wilcox, AZ all the way to Austin, TX…a good 810 miles. I had to make it there by the night as I was supposed to pick up my dear friend, Ann-Marie. A few things I learnt about myself from the rookie mistakes I made that day:
- My daily driving limit is 600 miles…beyond that, my butt hurts, a real pain in the ass.
- You lose an hour going from AZ to TX.
- Me and my car navigation have serious trust issues.
- You will encounter people walking on the side of the freeway with huge backpacks (possibly just crossed the border). Don’t give them a ride no matter how sorry you feel for them. The reason: you will pass the US Border Patrol later on the 10. According to a friend, you are not obligated to speak to the patrol guy and he has no legal grounds to arrest you if you don’t speak to him. Nonetheless, no picking up of random hitchhikers. (I didn’t, so no rookie mistake here)
Spent the day with Ann in Austin on Saturday. It is a young n hip town. Heard it is mostly due to the New Yorkers and Californian immigrants into the city. No wonder it felt like LA to me. Even the weather is similar. 70+ in winter. Saw some food and smoothies stops made from shipping containers. I am really into container homes/stores. If I have the means, I will run a company that does container homes. Ok, pipe dreams aside. Anyway, if you ever visit Austin, go on Congress Ave. Oh, me and Ann had amazing Bar-B-Q at Rudy’s. I’m sure the locals will tell you there are better places, but for a Californian, Rudy’s is damn good. On Sunday, I made a stop at Lakehills to see a good old friend before heading up to Arlington to spend the night. Had a motel nightmare but all worked out. Will spare you the details.
