Memphis, TN

2/11/15 – 2/12/15

Rolling into Memphis, I cannot help having the song “Memphis, Tennessee” (Elvis cover of course) play repeatedly in my head. First stop (thanks to Tiffany’s recommendation) is Graceland. A good thing I visited at an unpopular time of the year so I didn’t have to deal with crowds. I really wished my mom were with me. She would have enjoyed this. Graceland was a good size. However, for the King, I would have expected a more over-the-top place. Granted, he bought this place in 1957, only 2 years after his career really happened. So that was understandable. It was also nice that he kept that same place till the end. It was just incredible to imagine someone who was larger than life had come from this town. They kept the furnishings at Graceland as they were when he was living there which allows the mind an easier imagination.

Had my dinner at Cracker Barrel. Love this chain since I first had it 15 years ago. Why it hasn’t made its way to LA, I have no idea.

Checked out Beale Street the next day. Had a good Southern lunch at the King’s Palace Cafe. A lot of cool looking Blues bars. I can imagine how this place will come to life at night. Did some touristy souvenir shopping at this amazingly cool shop: A-Schwab. Found some very old school stuff there, even the raggedy dolls (the same type of doll as the Annabelle doll). How adorable and innocent they look.

Drove around town a little after my Beale Street visit. Found the city to be rather rough in general and somewhat stuck in the 50s with the blues music and memories of Elvis still very much alive. A city of a unique character indeed.
