Charleston, SC

2/15/15 – 2/16/15

Charleston was a surprise hit. I went there not knowing what to expect and it turned out to be everything and more. Of course a big part of it was thanks to Steve, Sara and Jeremy. Driving into town felt like I was transported back in time to the colonial days. A lot of the buildings are from those days, and I must say, the city did a great job maintaining them. It allows easy imagination of how life and things used to be.

If you somehow find yourself in Charleston (and I recommend you should), make your way to Boone Hall Plantation. It is the oldest working plantation. It started with Mr John Boone applying for land grant from King Charles in 1681. He later married the only daughter of his neighbor and the land size grew. You can read up the history on wiki or hear it at the tour on the grounds. A nice titbit for the Notebook fans, a part of it was filmed there. Another nice titbit for Blake Lively’s fans, her wedding was held there. Other than the house and the 9 remaining slave cabins, the most famous signature of the place is the row of 300 year old oak trees planted by My Thomas Boone. Oak trees take about 100 years to be grown up, so he never got to enjoy the fruits of his labor. His goal was possibly to share his vision of the beauty with future generations.

Another thing Charleston is known for is its oysters. We had dinner at The Ordinary and of course, we had to have the oysters sampler. All the different oysters were great but I have to admit that the ones from MA taste a little yummier. There are plenty of restaurants that serve the local oysters, so feel free to yelp them when you are visiting.

Overall, Charleston has been a great visit and a living lesson in history. I’m not sure there is another city that preserves history as well as Charleston. What a treat.
