2/20/15 – 2/23/15
Destination: Boston. This was the ‘final’ stop of my coast to coast. I had missed the crazy arctic storm that hit this city 2 weekends ago. Sky was clear and beautiful (chilling nonetheless at about 16 degrees). One thing that struck me was how very much like London the city was. They were mostly brick buildings and narrow. The subway was well connected just like the Underground. There was a park in the middle too, though smaller than St James’ Park. People were ice skating at this time. I went to this awesome brunch place on Newbury called Trident Booksellers and Cafe. Amazing brunch menu. I had the blueberry pancakes which was just superb. It was well cooked on both sides so it wasn’t the mushy kind. So few brick and mortar bookstores still exist, so it warmed my heart all the more to see this doing so well.
My night was spent at Harvard Square in Cambridge. Amazing campus. My heart would swell with pride if I had gone to that school. One thing I was told was that if locals want to meet at Harvard Square, they would meet at Out of Town News newsstand. Cute. The evening concluded with a show at Club Passim. Mary Fahl was performing. She was formerly the lead singer of October Project in the 90s. Still beautiful and a powerful singer.
Next day was spent driving around the greater Boston area as I will be moving there in a few months. After 14 years of Californication, it was time for a change. And where better than the beautiful Boston. Anyway, the only disheartening things was the cost of living. Some downgrades will need to happen.
I was also lucky enough to be the first to see the new band Jane’s Great Dane at rehearsal. They will be performing at the HRC in Boston on April 11. Go if you can. Amazing and talented musicians.
The night concluded with more good food. Had a surprisingly good Mexican food at El Pelon. I wouldn’t expect to find good Mexican food after leaving Texas, and especially in a city so far north. It was as good as the King Tacos we have here.
Conclusion: I’m really looking forward to making Boston my new home.
